Holiday safety message 2018

The holiday season is a wonderful and joyous time of the year, providing opportunities to visit family and friends. This is a time to celebrate, take much needed time off, and reflect on the past year.

Every individual’s safety awareness and involvement in identifying hazards could make the difference between an enjoyable, accident-free holiday season, and one ending in a tragedy.

In fiscal year 2018, services across the Department of Defense lost more than 151 Servicemembers to privately owned vehicle and motorcycle accidents. Driving great distances to be with family and friends, winter weather conditions, and the excitement of the holiday season increases our exposure to situations that could have catastrophic results.

Everyone is a leader when it comes to safety! We all must recognize hazards associated with winter and holiday activities, and practice safe behaviors during this special season. Leaders will address their formations on safety considerations to include cold weather injury prevention. Always use seatbelts, check the weather before traveling, have a designated driver, develop a rest plan for long distance driving, and never text and drive.

We sincerely appreciate you and your families’ dedication to defending our great Nation and all the wonderful work you do every day to accomplish the many missions we support here at Fort Gordon. From our families to yours, we wish you a happy and safe holiday season!
