The Columbus Day holiday weekend grants us the opportunity to enjoy time spent with family and friends and to enjoy the new season. Whether enjoying outdoor activities with your family or traveling out of town during this holiday, always keep safety in the forefront of your plans.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Each of you has as much authority as Command Sgt. Maj. Simmons and I to stop or mitigate circumstances that could save someone’s life or prevent injury. You can make the difference in protecting lives!

Privately owned vehicle and privately owned motorcycle accidents remain the primary cause of on-duty and off-duty Soldier fatalities. In Fiscal Year 18, the Army has lost 37 Soldiers to POV accidents and 21 Soldiers to motorcycle accidents. We must always be aware of other drivers, road conditions, and our driving abilities when operating vehicles.

Plan your trips well in advance of your travel dates, monitor the weather conditions, get proper rest, and never text and drive. Regardless of the activity or travel, we must identify and take measures to mitigate hazards leading to injury or accidents. Unit commanders will conduct vehicle safety inspections prior to the long weekend. Safety briefings will include safe driving, use of seatbelts, and not texting while driving.

Command Sgt. Maj. Simmons and I encourage you to enjoy this holiday and change of season by incorporating safe practices into your planned activities. We look forward to seeing you upon your return. As always, thank you for all your hard work, dedication, and your service to our Nation!
