Pointes West to open Memorial Day weekend

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start for summer and water activities. Public swimming pools will open and people will flock to the coast in search of a pre-season escape. While the coast may be a great option, those who prefer to stay closer to home can and still have fun.

Pointes West Army Resort will kick off swim season and the official opening of Pointes West Beach with its annual Beach Blast May 27. The resort’s lakeside beach opens at noon and festivities will run 1 - 6 p.m. Admission is free.

There will be games, giveaways, beach volleyball, music, an obstacle course, and more. Guests are welcome to bring their own blankets, chairs, food and drink. Those who wish to pack light may rent equipment and purchase food onsite. Pets are not allowed.

Darrell Butler, Pointes West Army Resort business manager, recommends arriving early.

“This is one of our biggest events, so I suggest coming early if you can,” Butler said.

Located in Appling, Pointes West is approximately 30 miles from Fort Gordon and described by Butler as “a hidden gem.” It’s surrounded by 70,000 acres of water and nearly 1,000 miles of shoreline ideal for camping, fishing, swimming and other outdoor activities. The beach is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, but other parts of the resort remain open year-round.

Camping is one of the resort’s biggest attractions and Butler said there is something for everyone. From roughing it in a tent to staying in the comforts of a motel suite, cabin, or cottage, campers have many options. For those who want to bring an RV or rent one from Pointes West, three of the camping areas have full hookups and two have semi-hookups. Four of the sites are primitive sites and ideal for tents.

Sites with hookups require reservations, which can be made up to six months in advance. There is a two-night minimum, unless a same-day reservation is available, in which case campers may book one night.

Fishing is authorized with either a Georgia or South Carolina fishing license.

Non- motorized fishing boats, kayaks, canoes, and paddle-boats are available for rent.

The resort also features a waterfront Conference Center available for weddings, retirement parties, and other special events.

Just as there are things to do that cost a nominal fee, there is also plenty to do without having to pay.

Guests are free to explore the grounds’ natural surroundings and have access to picnic areas, playgrounds, and other amenities.

“It’s one of the cleanest sites around, the prices are fair and reasonable … people just love coming out here,” Butler said.

Pointes West is open to all Department of Defense cardholders and DoD contract employees. Non- DoD cardholders may patronize the resort with a military sponsor. To be placed on the access list, the sponsor must call the resort.
