How many of us have heard or perhaps even used the phrase, “You should be ashamed of yourself.” Friends; being told to be ashamed of ones’ self is never pleasant. Many clinicians firmly believe that shame is intertwined with multiple issues that will cause people to seek spiritual counseling. Failing to address the shame can hinder recovery.

So, what is shame? According to Webster’s dictionary, shame is a painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the consciousness of wrong or foolish behavior. None of us want to be ashamed, therefore, we build a mask to protect ourselves from others. Studies have shown that shame has become a silent epidemic in our society that causes us to isolate ourselves from others. That is why it is becoming harder presently to converse with someone about personal issues we are going through. There are times that even your own close relatives can betray you. But notice what the Bible says, “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame” (1 Peter 2:6). Jesus Christ has the power to remove shame and guilt from you. He has dealt with shame before when he was falsely accused, smitten, bruised, wounded and crucified on the cross, buried, but rose again. Remember, Jesus is the man of sorrows; Jesus is the chief shepherd, and whenever you bring your personal, sensitive and embarrassing issues to him, trust that he will remove the shame from you.

When shame brings you down, lift up your eyes to Jesus from where your help comes from. When shame discourages you, look up to the Lord for encouragement. When shame creates a hopeless situation, look up to the Lord because Jesus is the hope of glory.

When shame weakens your spiritual life, look up to the Lord because he is the source of your strength. When shame causes you to be sorrowful, look up to Jesus because he is our comforter. Friends; Jesus has the power to remove the shame out of your life right at this very moment. Never quit on the Lord, just give your life to Jesus and he will be the Lord of your life.
