Scholarships available

The Association of the United States Army Bob Snead Memorial Scholarship application deadline is July 17. There will be two scholarships for $2000 awarded to two eligible participants. Applications are available at the Fort Gordon Education Office. For more information, call (706) 726-1188.

Accordion auditions

The Community’s all Accordion Band is auditioning through July 12 music-reading accordionists for Oktoberfest performances. Call (706) 736-6775 for appointment and location.

Nominate a hero

The Exchange’s “Because of You” wants patrons to nominate a special hero for the Dickies American Hero of the Year Contest. The winning nominees will receive: First prize $25,000 and Four Finalists $1,000. All active duty or retired U.S. military personnel, and their families and friends, are eligible. Hourly care

CDC West offers hourly care from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Breakfast, lunch and small snacks are included. There is a minimum of two hours and maximum of 24 hours per week, per child. For more information, call (706) 791-3993.

Gym memorial

A recommendation is being considered to memorialize Warrior Fitness Center (Gym 6). To ensure the widest possible nominations, all request must be submitted by Aug. 1, to Directorate of Human Resources, ATTN; Memorialization Board Recorder, 307 Chamberlain Ave., Fort Gordon, GA 30905. Free golf

Through June 30, E1-E5, active duty, can enjoy free green fees at Gordon Lakes Golf Club, located at Bldg. 537 Range Road. For more information, call (706) 791- 2433 or go to www.fortgordon.com. Carts, clubs, etc. are not included.

Veterans Employment Center

The Veterans Employment Center is the federal government’s online tool for connecting transitioning service members, veterans and their families to meaningful career opportunities in the public and private sectors. The VEC can be found at www.ebenefits.va.gov/jobs.

Reed Creek

Georgia free veteran driver’s license

The Georgia Department of Driver Services offers a free state driver’s license to honorable discharged veterans who have served on active duty or active duty in a reserve component, including the National Guard, during a time of war. If you enlisted while a resident of Georgia or who have been a resident of Georgia for at least two years immediately preceding the date of application for the license you can qualify for the free veteran’s license. Take your DD Form 214 to the local VA office to receive a certificate of eligibility, which you will take to a Georgia DDS with proof of residency. For more information, visit www.dds. ga.gov.

Unit health

The Fort Gordon Army Wellness Center’s Team of Health Educators is available to provide education at the unit level on a variety of health and wellness topics. Chaplain services

The Chaplain Family Life Center offers many services to help community members. Located at Academic Drive, Bldg 38804, the Family Life Center and Chaplains provide free, unlimited and confidential counseling. The center is open during duty hours, 9 a.m. until 4 or 5 p.m. Hourly sessions are available for individuals, couples, and families who either need to address concerns or who seek education, relationship enrichment, and personal improvement, religious and spiritual growth. Parenting classes

The Army Community Services offers New Parent Support parenting classes and support groups. Classes are scheduled at the Family Outreach Center 1 to 3 p.m. each 2nd Tuesday: Prenatal Support, 2nd Wednesday: screamfree parenting, 3rd Tuesday: breastfeeding support, 3rd Wednesday: Dads 101, 4th Tue day: single parenting support, 4th Wednesday: baby basics. Stress management

Army Community Service will offer Total Force Stress Management classes to all active duty, National Guard, Army Reserve, family members, retirees and DoD civilians, at no cost. Call ACS at (706) 791-3579 to register.

Plasma donors

Fort Gordon’s Blood Center needs volunteers for freezedried, combat ready blood plasma. Donors must be male, weigh at least 175 pounds, and have A, B, or AB blood types. For more information, call (706)787-1014, 787-3234, or visit www.facebook.com/fortgordonbloodcenter.

Tutors available

Funded by the DoD MWR Library Program, Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program, the Army General Library Program, and Navy General Library Program, www.tutor.com/ military for military families is able to offer homework and studying help from a professional tutor any time of day or night. Free for K-12 students in Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard and Reserve families. Expert tutors are available online 24/7 to help students in more than 16 subjects, Math, Science, English and Social Studies.

Fort Gordon Retiree Council

The Fort Gordon Retiree Council is made up of 20 members who are military retirees or the widow/widower of a military retiree. The volunteers meet quarterly for the purpose of presenting issues of a local nature and suggest improvements for the well-being of retired Soldiers, family members and survivors to the Fort Gordon Garrison Command and to the chief of staff of the Army’s Retiree Council at Department of the Army. Kroc Center

Triad survey

The Performance Triad is a comprehensive plan to improve readiness and increase resilience through public health initiatives and leadership engagement. The focus of the Triad is on Sleep, Activity, and Nutrition among Army family members. Please take a minute to conduct a short survey on this ongoing program: go.usa.gov/P6j4.

HVAC filters

All units and activities are reminded of their responsibility for obtaining and changing filters in all accessible HVAC units, every 30-45 days. The preventive maintenance team is responsible for changing filters in areas which are secured and controlled by maintenance. Failure to change filters on a regular basis, affects proper operation of HVAC systems. Filters are available at the U-Do-It store, Building 40101. For more information, call (706) 791-3942.

Life consultants

Military and Family Life Consultants (MFLCs) provides solution-oriented consultations to individuals, couples, families, and groups. The program is designed to provide support and assistance to active duty Soldiers, National Guard and Reserves, military Family members and civilian personnel. Consultants can help people who are having trouble coping with concerns and issues of daily life. The consultant can do one-on-one sessions, couples sessions, family sessions or even teach classes.
