Installation to host sprint triathlon
The Fort Gordon Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation team will kick off the installation’s first triathlon, the “Dare to Tri-Sprint Triathlon,” March 29 at 10 a.m.
“The Fort Gordon Sprint Triathlon is a great new addition to the 2014 Georgia Triathlon Series calendar,” said Susie Joyner, chief of the Fort Gordon DFMWR Recreation Division. “This is a sprint triathlon which is designed to encourage participants to try the triathlon in the exciting multisport world.”
“ This event consists of a 300-meter swim to take place at the indoor pool, Building 21608, on Barnes Avenue; then the event transitions to a 12-mile bike course, and finally a 5K run,” Joyner explained. “An Olympic Triathlon is the international standard triathlon of the Olympic Games. An Olympic Triathlon event consists of a 1.2 kilometer swim, 25 mile bike, and 10 kilometer run.”
“Our triathlon event is a great way to take part in a triathlon,” she added. “Participants will be offered water and energy drinks at the various aid stations set up along the biking and running courses.”
Fort Gordon DFMWR has arranged to have quality road bikes available for service members to train with and during the “Dare Tri” competition.
“We hope to encourage Soldiers who may not have a good road bike available by offering our road bikes for training,” said Neil Smith, director, Sports, Fitness and Aquatics,
DFMWR, Recreation Division for the installation. “Cost is $10 day or a three-day rental is $25 through Get Outdoors Gordon.
The road bikes are free, based on availability, during the competition March 29.”
According to Smith, the triathlon is open to anyone age 10 years or old.
“We will take reservations up to and including March 29, the day of the event; however, the last day to register online is 10 a.m. March 26,” he explained.
“Presently, we have about 118 individuals registered for the triathlon but this does not include registrations pending based on final credit card approval,” said Smith. “I want to point out that this is not a fundraiser; the intent of the race is to cover all expenses.”
The Fort Gordon DFMWR is using a category pricing system which encourages early registration. The entry categories according to Smith include: Athena, novice male, novice female, age group male, age group female, and the Clydesdales.
Besides the swim, bike and run events service members can enter the active-duty military relay. Relays can be a two-person (one person does two legs and one person does one leg) or a three-person team, ( each person does one leg of the event). Teams can consist of any mix of genders.
Active duty military units or individual service members can compete in the relay, according to Smith.
All the races are timed with a chip attached to each participant.
“All participants must complete the race in less than 2 hours and 15 minutes,” said Smith. “Race officials reserve the right to pull a participant off the course if it appears as though that individual will not be able to meet the above time requirement.”
A complete list of rules is available on the USA Triathlon website, usatriathlon.org. In addition, rules and race details will be included in everyone’s packets, according to Smith. “Packets will be ready for pickup 6 p.m. March 28 during the athlete briefing at the finish line of the run segment of the race course on Barton Field. During this time participants can ask questions about the upcoming race.”
Prizes will be presented to the winners based on race placement.
“Individual awards will be given to the overall winner for the male and female participant,” Smith explained. “In addition, prizes will be given out to winners in the various age groups for both male and females; Clydesdale, Athena, the male and female military winner, and the male and female novice.”
Race results are expected to be posted online at the race website.
