Combatives tournament open to all service members
The University of Phoenix in Augusta, the United Services Automobile Association, and the Fort Gordon Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation will join BOSS in offering a challenging run of competition for those daring enough to take it on and test their skills while having some fun.
The event is open to all active-duty, National Guard members and reservists in all services.
“The competition is free to enter with cash prizes and trophies to be awarded to the top three competitors from each class,” according to Sgt. Robert Llewellyn, the Fort Gordon installation BOSS president.
“All competitors regardless of skill level will be competing based on weight classes,” Llewellyn explained. “ In addition, males and females will also compete against each other within their respective weight classes.”
“ Combatants wil l compete in six weight classes,” said Senior Airman KatyAnn Coulter, the installation Air Force Liason representative and BOSS member.
“ The classes are flyweight ( males 125 pounds and below and females 131 pounds and below); lightweight (males 140 pounds and below and females 147 pounds and below); welterweight (males 155 pounds and below and females 163 pounds and below); middleweight (males 170 pounds and below and female 179 pounds and below); cruiserweight (males 185 pounds and below and females 194 pounds and below); light weight (males 205 pounds and below and females 215 pounds and below); and heavyweights (males 205 pounds and up and females 215 pounds and up),” she explained.
Army leaders and Soldiers are taught close quarters combatives to instill the Warrior Ethos and to prepare Soldiers to defeat the enemy in handto hand combat.
“ This tournament provides a unique opportunity for service members from all branches to come together to compete to see who is the “best of the best”,” said Llewellyn.
