Gym goers taking “90 Days to Get Fit” with on post program
Quite a few Americans set out to lose weight and get buffed about this time of year. Gym memberships soar at least for the month of January then it always seems to taper off around President’s Day. The Fort Gordon Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation and Dick’s Sporting Goods has teamed up to offer a fun and interesting way to get toned and trim through the installation’s “90 Days to Get Fit” program.
The program premiered last year as “Rejuvenate: 31 Days to Get Fit” through the master minds of Molly Swift, former editor of the Fort Gordon’s FYI monthly, now quarterly publication, Nathan Hoeller, the creative director of FYI, and Crystal Tyson, the installation DFMWR marketing and advertising assistant. The team polled its readers and discovered the resolution, which consistently topped the list, was to get fit and healthy.
“ We thought, what better way to keep someone accountable than to have a group of people posting it online together,” Crystal Tyson said.
Last year’s competition was held online on Facebook. “Participants were asked to post a picture of themselves getting fit – either in a conventional way, or in a more creative way,” she added. “The person with the most ‘likes’ per week won a prize.”
“This year we are turning it up,” Tyson explained. “Not only are we increasing the number of days of fitness to 90, but we are providing a fun way to train for sporting events, such as the upcoming Dare to Tri: Sprint Triathlon, which takes place March 29 at various locations on the installation.”
The event starts at 10 a.m. March 29; the cost will depend on when one registers and it is open to the public. The last day to sign up for the triathlon is 10 a.m. March 26.
One of the contestants signed up for the triathlon, Sgt. 1st Class Oscar Duram, a Reservist with the 5010th U.S. Army Hospital on post and a physical evaluation officer with the Integrated Disability Evaluation System at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center, was out riding the 5K dirt track on Barton Field Sunday with his sons, Gabriel, age 6, and Lucas, age 3.
“ I have been doing triathlons for 25 years,” Duram said. “I rode the 20- kilometer [ about 12-mile] trek, which is to be part of, the Dare to Tri: Sprint Triathlon. It’s a nice course which will be challenging for everyone. At times I looked down at the odometer on my Blackwell Trek Riding bike and I was going 37 to 38 miles per hour, but going up steep hills it was more difficult. In the easiest gear I was going 5 to 6 miles per hour.”
The challenge is open to anyone who would like to participate. However, the prizes are only available to service members, dependents, retirees, Department of Defense civilians and DOD contractors.
The “90 Days to Get Fit” program kicked off New Year’s Day and will run through March 31. “Participants need to post pictures or videos of themselves working out, eating healthy, or sharing personal wellness tips on our social media pages to win a weekly prize,” Tyson explained. “Just like last year, the post which receives the most ‘likes’ will win a prize at the end of the week.”
“You can also increase your chances to win by posting on Instagram and Twitter,” she added. “Remember to use #MWRFIT.”
The first week winner, Lauren Jungk Updike, took home the aquatics package, which included: a Speedo Backpack, swim cap, towel, goggles and a coupon for one group lesson or three private lessons for herself, a spouse or child.
The grand prize, a $400 gift card to Dick’s Sporting Goods, will be awarded at the end of the 90-day event.
